For my portfolio I had to write a biography for myself. This was a surreal thing to do trying to see myself professionally how someone else would see me. It was strange to see recurring themes etc in my filmography, because I had never really considered things like that before. I had never considered that I have any kind of recognisable style, but I guess I do to a certain degree. Anyway, this is what I came up with:
Daniel Bingham made his first short film when he was seven years old and immediately knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life making films. He is now a 21-year-old writer, director and producer based in Edinburgh, Scotland, although he’s originally from Northern Ireland.
He loves to tell character-focused stories which explore the world of unique individuals. Typically, he focuses on ‘outsider’ characters who never really fit into the world in which they find themselves. Often his characters have some kind of dream which they devote their lives to the pursuit of, despite never quite being able to achieve it. His films often explore themes of mental-health, mortality and existentialism. He has always had a passion for genre filmmaking. He views genre as an opportunity to explore the themes and ideas that are important to him, using iconography that an audience is already familiar with. For example, in Radio Underground, the short film he was working on before the pandemic, he used the iconography of post-apocalyptic films in order to explore themes of depression and loneliness. The film is about a man who spends every single day alone in his shelter scanning radio frequencies for other survivors. To explore loneliness, he wanted to make a character who was, quite literally, unable to truly connect to anyone else.
He has made countless short films over the years in all kinds of different genres, for example Hostages (2019), a crime-comedy, Parasite (2018), a psychological horror, and he’s currently in post-production on The Hollow Men, a neo-western. He is also in the development stage of several feature films and a mini-series and he is in the process of setting up a production company with fellow filmmaker Harris Palmer.
