Kirsten MacLeod gave us a wee talk on freelancing. Again, it was more focused on journalism but she raised a few interesting points.
- She said that it's a good idea to be prepared to travel for work.
- Don't just focus on your specialism. If you are multi-skilled, you will be a very attractive candidate for some companies.
- Make sure you get on well with people you work with. Your reputation is very important.
- Be prepared to compromise with roles or type of production/genre/format to gain experience because all experience is good experience
- Network. Follow up on contacts, attend events, get to know people.
- Know the industry you want to work in, the people, the programmes/ films/ writers/ reporters.
