As a writer director, I find my speciality don't often come up as useful on other people's sets. However, I always like to do my bit and help out on other people's sets. So when Callum asked me for a hand on his taster, despite my busyness, I felt I should say yes. It ended up being a fun night. It's always nice being on set when you aren't directing. I don't do it often, but it's nice to take a break from the constant pressure and just enjoy the atmosphere that comes from a load of people gathered for the sake of filmmaking.
We filmed on the beach at Portobello. It was right next to where I shot Hostages a year ago, so it felt surreal to be back. Honestly, my job didn't really have a clearly defined title. Initially, I was a 2nd AC and gaffer, helping get set up for the shoot, however once that was done, I was a steward. I just had to ask people not to be too loud while we were filming.
However, as the night went on, there were less people and it got colder, so my job changed. Mackenzie, the lead actor, was strapped to a chair for the film and couldn't actually move. Since it was colder, I was actually in charge of wrapping him up in a blanket between takes. It was a surreal job to have, but I know Mackenzie a wee bit from a previous shoot, so it was nice to have a bit of a catch-up with him.
Can't wait to see how the film turns out. The bits I did see looked great. Harris was clearly a bit nervous to be directing; because he hasn't actually directed on the course before since he decided he wanted to specialise in producing. Looks like he did a good job though.
