The Late Daniel Bingham

Updated: Jan 24, 2020

No. I’m not dead. I’m just a day late writing a blog post. I apologise.

However, things aren’t going great, but at least I’m not dead… I’ve made basically no progress on ‘Armed Hold-Up’, the Film Theory essay and I’ve backtracked in Film Production Management.

In FPC, I presented Paul with my idea and he really liked it. He was actually very complimentary and said I had a great cinematic understanding. But he said it didn’t quite fit the specifications and might be better off as a personal pursuit, which is fair enough. My new idea, which was painfully difficult to come up with, looks at the myth of a musician selling his soul to the devil for musical ability.

Armed Hold-Up hasn’t progressed at all, however I’ve decided to remove some of the jokes. At the moment it is a straight up comedy, however I think it might work better if it was a bit more serious with more genuine characters. In fact I think that the film becomes a lot more interesting and has much more potential through this.

The Film Theory essay has not gone well so far! I think I might look at editing, but I’m worried that most people will do editing, so that mightn’t be a great idea. There is so much work on it I still need to do.

At the moment, I’m panicking a bit because there is so much work I have to do still. However I feel that I should still be doing more. I’d like to make two short films outside of the course before Christmas and then over Christmas making a real effort to write a feature.

This week I’ve been listen to a lot of blues music, hence the soul selling idea. I’ve also listened to a lot of Leonard Cohen, who I think must have been a genius. I haven’t watched very much, but here’s a rundown:

  1. Pirates of the Caribbean – Dead Man’s Chest is a film I’d watched as a child and liked, but it held up surprisingly well upon a rewatch. It was at times visually spectacular and, given two or three more redrafts of the screenplay, I reckon it could have been absolutely fantastic! 7/10

  2. Pirates of the Caribbean – At World’s End was less of a success story however. It was much less fun and filled with many more characters, none of which are developed or interesting. 5/10

  3. Punch-Drunk Love is a very good film. I was surprised to enjoy it, considering that it’s an Adam Sandler film, but it was genuinely fantastic! The writing and directing were great with some really nice editing. Definitely my favourite of this week’s watches. 8/10

Well that’s about it then…

Dan
