Class With Paul

Updated: Dec 6, 2020

Paul asked us, "Why is your film important to be made NOW? What circumstances are we living through that make your film relevant?"

That's a big question and I have no idea how to answer it. Is our film relevant?

I think it is, although perhaps it doesn't directly relate to current events in the same way some other films might. However, I think the film deals things which most people probably struggle with at some point in their lives.

As Aaron and I wrote the film, I think we were drawing from some very personal fears; not that we’re afraid of becoming Hitmen, but Ellis is a man who slipped into a routine. While he may have once had dreams, they are long forgotten. Ellis is an empty shell. To me, if you strip away the style, symbolism and blood, that’s what the film is about. That fear that you’re never going to do anything with your life; that you’re just going to fade away into nothing. I think we all feel like that sometimes.

I think that question puts a lot of pressure on us as filmmakers to make something that's meaningful to our audience. I don't know if I can do that. I don't know if I'm a good enough filmmaker to achieve that. But the film is meaningful to me, so I can only hope that other people are able to take something away from it too.
