I was actually much happier with the new structure because it would be much more visually unique and there would be lots of room for some really interesting sound design. However, I was a lot happier because we finally knew exactly what film we were making.
We decided to use very little of the interview with Jana, however it was still crucial in shaping the film. We discovered an audio recording of a radio broadcaster’s announcement of the Russian invasion and the eventual revolution. We thought this would make a really nice bookend for the film.
The film would go from room to room and Jana would explain memories associated with each room. The film’s visuals would be composed of stop motion animations of photographs of each room. These would have additional fabrics and materials on top of the photograph for emphasis. We would also add archive photographs of Jana and her family in frames throughout the film in each room.
