Film Adaptation 5: The Film That Ran Away

Updated: Jan 25, 2020

Well the shoot went very badly. It was two nights from the shoot at around 2:00 in the morning when I sat down with Aaron and he showed me the shot list that Harris had written. I wasn’t sure about a lot of the shots at the start because they were full of movement. However, when it got to the dialogue, everything fell apart and it turned out they weren’t even finished. It repeatedly broke the 180 degree rule and got lots of things in the wrong order. I sat with Aaron for a few hours and really quickly sketched out a new plan to propose to Harris the following day.

I didn’t hear from them again until I turned up for the shoot itself and met the actors. I’m not sure I was happy with the casting, but that wasn’t up to me  so maybe Harris had reinterpreted the script. However, at the end of the day, I think it was just bad casting. Harris seemed to really struggle to work with any of the actors, possibly due to the lack of a rehearsal. Unfortunately he didn’t really direct the actors performances in order to improve them and consistently moved on without achieving a good performance. He focused more on camera, however, it was still relatively unprepared.

Aaron’s cinematography was ok, but could have done with a lot more work. He seemed to get cocky and then he tired very quickly. In the end the lighting was ok, however it was inconsistent and wasn’t as stylistic as everyone wanted.

Kirsty’s production design was pretty good too. Did the job.

I was AC for the shoot and was in charge of making sure the rig was correct and changing lenses. I also had to pull focus on several shots.

It’s very frustrating when you put so much effort into something for other people who don’t hold their end. I don’t think my screenplay was amazing, but due to poor direction it really does come across as pretty bad.
