On the 5th and 7th of March we shot the main bulk of the film. It was a pretty smooth shoot with no major mishaps, which was really good. We had prepared all of the images we needed in advance so we knew exactly what we had to do on the day. It was a cosy wee set with only Joe, Becky and I filming.
On the first day, we had lots of stop-motion to do. The radio broadcaster recording used in the film was obviously in Slovak. We needed to subtitle this, however I felt have the subtitles added in post would betray the tone of the film and wouldn’t fit in very well. In the end, we actually animated the subtitles in production. They were handwritten on pieces of fabric and move into frame. This is obviously much more difficult, but I thought it was worth going the extra mile to achieve. It was a very long day of moving things millimetre by millimetre for the animation, but we got there in the end. The most difficult piece of animation was of the hair slowly wrapping itself around a hair curler. This took hours to do because the wig we were using just wouldn’t do what we wanted it to.
On the second day, we got a close-up shot of the knob of the radio. We wanted to match-cut between the radio knob and the hair curlers, so it took a long time to get the shots just right. However, we kept the most difficult shot until last. The shot started with the exterior of the house where you can see each of the rooms through holes in the walls. The camera then pushes in through one of these holes into a room with a radio. This took many attempts and took us most of the day to get right.
The shoot was very pleasant and I’m very happy with what we shot. I can’t wait to help bring it all together and see the finished product.
