Down in the Hole - Loneliness and Depression

For this film I'm writing with Aaron, there are a few sources I've been drawing on, and I wanted to mention them.

I mentioned Sabrina a few posts ago. I think this film could work with that kind of character introduction, but I've already spoken about that, so I'll not linger on it here.

Taxi Driver is a fascinating film. It gives a view of a messed up man. While he is certainly a more extreme character than what we are writing, I found the shots of him walking, isolated down the street very effective, and I'd love to try something similar.

Next, a big influence has been Pink Floyd’s The Wall. I'm not even going to go into why. This film and this album has inspired me and my filmmaking in more ways than I could count. I think everyone should watch it. It's not a perfect film, but it's incredible. So creative. The only thing I will say, is that, while under completely different circumstances, the man in Down in the Hole is going through something very similar to Pink. He is shrinking into himself. He feels so alone that he begins to doubt his own existence.

Perhaps hanging over from my work on Tumour, L’Étranger is a big influence. A quote I liked was, "I looked up at the mass of signs and stars in the night sky and laid myself open for the first time to the benign indifference of the world.”
