So that's the second load of responses to our casting calls in. However, I'm honestly still not satisfied. Again, I'm sure these are great actors, but I'm just not seeing Ellis in there.
However, again, here are a few examples.
Calum Main was very difficult to gage, because of his... unusual self-tape. I really appreciated seeing something a bit different, but he just wasn't Ellis. He didn't look right for the role and I just didn't get the threatening feeling off of him that is needed.
Gregor Firth played the roughness well. I bought him as a killer. But that seemed to be all there was to his portrayal. He was rough and threatening, but there was no inner psychology going on there. He would be good in a very particular role, but again, he wasn't quite Ellis. He didn't have that softer side.
Derek Jeck was an American actor. It was strange to hear the character read out in that accent, because of the amount of inspiration we were drawing from America films. However, similar to Firth, I didn't get the sense of much depth.
One big issue I'm having time and time again is that these actors aren't getting the sense of weariness, brokenness and inner turmoil that is key to Ellis.
Perhaps another casting call is in order...
