Hello there, eager reader.
When we told Catriona our Noir idea, she didn’t like it. She liked the concept and the character dynamics, but didn’t like us making a noir. Unfortunately this was the aspect I found most interesting, but Harris, the director, decided that since she was marking it, it would be better to do what she suggested, so I had to cut it.
We decided to stick with neo-noir, but that is more of a visual style an gave me very little genre pointers for the script. I wrote another version of the script, this time without the noir aspect. Harris liked this version, however I felt it was very melodramatic and I wasn’t a fan. I felt that it had lost the aspect that had made it most interesting. On top of this, there was no logical reason why the film should be neo-noir, because its substance was more like an episode of Eastenders.
At this stage, we shot the taster film. However, in all honesty, we didn’t know what the narrative of the final film was going to be. We enjoyed making the taster. I ADd, ACd, edited, and obviously wrote it. Thankfully the taster was well recieved and our film. However the film we ended up pitching was rushed.
It was late on Friday night that I came up with the idea. I found it interesting how little attention was paid to the boy who fathered Jo’s child. Our film follows this boy, now a man, several years after he initially left. It is only a matter of weeks after he has had a bitter reunion to Jo.
The film opens with the man hiding from the police. He has been injured in a robbery gone wrong and turns to Jo in his desperation. She is furious at him, but the circumstances force them to try and reconnect. However, Geoff, who lives with Jo, isn’t having any of it and he calls the police. The man is forced to run, but Jo discovers that he has left a bag of money from the robbery for her and the child.
The inspiration behind the film for me was from films like Blood Simple and Nightcrawler, however it was from songs as well. Particularly Pigs on the Wing and Paranoid Eyes both written by Roger Waters. And also songs like This Night Has Opened My Eyes by The Smiths, which itself was directly inspired by A Taste of Honey.
