Listen - https://vimeo.com/196593911
Listen was one of my favourite films from this week. I found the constant confusion of losing meaning through translation honestly terrifying. The woman felt truly helpless and entirely misunderstood and I found that to be a particularly powerful character; only emphasised by the fact that we can't see her face. The people who were able to help her were there; she'd found them. However they simply wouldn't help, whether intentionally or not.
Submarine - https://vimeo.com/233685439
I think Submarine was my favourite film from this week. I don't know how much it'll help for my grad film, however it's one that I'd like to look back on if we ever manage to get Radio Underground back into production (my last year film that got canceled due to the outbreak of covid 19). I think the production design of this film was the standout feature. The world felt lived in and falling apart. The cinematography was stunning too.
Hail Mary Country - https://vimeo.com/tannazhazemi/hailmarycountry
I get what it was going for, but I didn't much like Hail Mary Country. The film clearly wanted to express a commentary on gender by reversing the roles. And fair enough; that's great. But the actual content of the film wasn't treated with the same level of depth, often substituting opportunities for character drama with cheap jokes. I think many of the performances were too over the top. It's one of those films you get the frustrating impression while watching it that they think they're being much more clever than they are. Not my cup of tea.
The Shining Star of Losers Everywhere - https://vimeo.com/176459945
I really liked documentary, although it was admittedly a bit too long. I really liked the animation style. It was very simple, but there was a certain charm to its simplicity. It was then nice when at the end we got some found footage and we finally got an opportunity to see the horse. My filmmaking interests have never been in documentaries, however I really enjoyed this one and I reckon if I did find myself making one, I'd want it to be something like this. It's a fun story told simply but effectively. And who doesn't love an underdog?
