The location process was a rocky one, pun intended.
Aaron and I went on countless walks in the Pentlands, Ruth joining us when she could. We found all kinds of locations which would be perfect for the film.
However, Ruth wanted them to be close enough to the Bonaly Scout Camp. In fact, she wanted them in the scout camp. I was totally against filming in the camp, because it really didn't have the rough, remote feeling that we were looking for.
Aaron and I had found all of our locations, and Ruth had agreed with most of them. We set to work planning how we'd shoot it.
That is until we were dropped the bombshell that A) we were only allowed to film with the guns on private land, and B) we were to minimise the filming we were to do in the country park. Film Edinburgh offered us a few hours in the country park and that was it. This certainly came as a shock, considering we had planned to shoot the entire film in the country park.
So we did a mad scramble trying to find private ground to film on. We managed to find Craigie's Farm, which would work for the opening where Ellis and Kane split off. We also found Clubbiedean Trout Fishery, which would maybe work for the river scene. It wasn't ideal, but it would do.
So, Aaron and I replanned how we would shoot the film. We were all good to go. And then, literally days before the shoot, Ruth told us we still weren't allowed the gun at the Trout Fishery, despite it being private ground. Why would she not tell us this earlier? So we had to rush to replan the scene with all the stuff with the gun filmed elsewhere. Nightmare.
