Original Idea

Every single day the film makes new, surprising developments. However, it's shocking to look back on the original concept for the film. It's just a completely different film from where we are now. I thought I'd give a wee summary of the original idea.

Since the disastrous cancelation of our shoot last term, Aaron and I knew we had to do something totally different this year. Radio Underground was almost entirely set in one very small room with no airflow. With Covid 19, this obviously made filming incredibly dangerous, so the shoot had to, quite rightly, be canceled. However, this year we already knew that would be an issue, so we had a chance to preempt it. We decided we would write a film that was basically the polar opposite of our film last year; we would set this film entirely outside.

Aaron and I both love hiking and we are both big fans of the show Detectorists, so we thought it would be nice to write something with a similar appreciation for nature and landscapes. We thought it would be amazing to make a film set in the highlands. I've never done that before; we actually came up with a location first before anything else. I know that's not how you're meant to do it, but hey; there are no rules, only guidelines.

So, this brings me to the plot we came up with. The film was about a couple of witchhunters. They were young and just starting out in the business. One of them, Warren, was much more convicted about the job, and Franklin didn't much like it. So they set out in the hills to track and kill a witch who had been abducting and eating the local children. However, this was no ordinary witch. She was far greater an evil than any witch that had come before her. There was a prophecy that a man matching Warren's description would slay the witch beneath a blood moon. Warren let this pressure go to his head, sure that it was about him. He spent night and day training for the moment; his life consumed with this one goal.

So they set out on the hills. Warren wouldn't let Franklin cook for fear that the smell of flesh would attract the witch. Franklin and Warren fight constantly due to their differing personalities. Warren if entirely focused on the job, but Franklin tries to teach him to relax a little and enjoy the moment before it's too late.

Eventually, they get close enough to the witch and perform a ritual. They prepare to fight the witch and cut their hands in order for the smell of blood to attract her. The witch arrives and they fight. However, the fight is anticlimactic and disappointing. The witch dies easily.

Warren is depressed and Franklin doesn't understand because he had fulfilled his objective. He says, " I thought you’d be more excited. Or happier at least." The two men connect. Franklin doesn't understand Warren, but he's willing to accept him.
