- Save the Cat: Introduce the hero by having them do something good or likeable. If they are morally grey, have the bad guy be worse. Make sure the audience is in sync with your character.
- Pope in the Pool: Hides exposition by giving us something exciting or funny to look at. Eg, Pirates of the Caribbean.
- Double Mumbo Jumbo: You can't have more than one piece of magic per film. Once you establish your world, you can't break it again.
- Laying Pipe: Be wary of how much set-up you require. Don't lay too much pipe.
- Watch out for that Glacier: Your danger must be present danger. It can't be far off and slow moving. We must understand to consequences headed for our hero.
- The Covenant of the Arc: Every character, with the exception of your bad guys, must have changed throughout the film. Write everyone's arc on your board.
- Keep the Press Out: Keep your story small and personal. It's a secret between the characters and the audience. Once you bring the press in, you make it a world issue and your character's situation is less desperate.
