I had a meeting with Harris Redpath to discuss him possible writing a small amount of original score for the film. I've heard his music before and I think he has the potential to be really good. I'd like something a bit folky in order to fit the film thematically and the western vibes too. I've gotten Harris to listen to a bunch of music as inspiration. Here's a link to my personal playlist for the film. Feel free to give it a listen, but fair warning; it's quite long!
Here is the piece Harris and I were playing around with in our meeting. I was impressed with Harris' ability and while it's not quite what I want yet, I'm confident he'll be able to deliver. I'm aware that this is obviously a very early stage to be worrying about score, but music is such an integral part of my filmmaking process that it was only natural to begin this development. Here is a sample of what we've done so far.
However, a few pieces in particular that I like the sound of are Leonard Cohen's cover of Avalanche, the Dead Man soundtrack and Tom Waits' Yesterday is Here.
I love the sound of the guitar at the start of Avalanche. It has quite a melancholic, relentless yet dead feeling to it for me. It's difficult to describe. I'm aware that it's quite a difficult style of guitar to play, so I don't know if Harris is able to do it, but I'd like to give it a go and see what happens.
The soundtrack to Dead Man is clearly very folk inspired, however there is an electric guitar element that comes in and gives it a bit of a harsh edge. It gives it a more rough and dirty feeling, which I really like, while never loosing the Western feeling.
I also love the meandering guitar in Tom Waits' Yesterday is Here. I hadn't initially considered electric guitar for this film, but now that I have, there is something about it that just feels right.
See below for my entire playlist that I update regularly. It's interesting to create a playlist that develops alongside the film. I find it very useful to nail down the film's tone.
