I watched a few short films and I thought it might be interesting to share some thoughts about them.
Brothers
Brothers is a short film directed by Robert Eggers. It was an interesting wee film with some absolutely gorgeous cinematography. However, I didn't buy the actors in their roles, which very much spoiled the experience for me. The film was very much character focused rather than plot focused, however due to the disappointing performances it was difficult to fully invest in the film. Really interesting piece of work though, that I'll definitely rewatch.
Work
Work was a very well made film, with an impressive lead performance. It was well shot with some fantastic sound design. However, the pacing seemed off to me, making the film feel a lot longer than it really was. Still, a well made film.
Lightning in the Hand
Lightning in the Hand was definitely the weakest of the three films that I watched. It was the one which I was most interested in watching, because it's a western and I haven't see many western short films. I thought it would be interesting to watch in relation to my own short film, which is very western inspired. However, honestly, I was left fairly disappointed. I think it was very well made. There was some nice cinematography, the production design looked good, the performances were good enough etc. However there was just no personality. I like westerns, but the film seemed to think it was enough to just fall into the western genre and that would make me like it. But you need to do something more than just dress up like a cowboy. I need characters and themes to make me care about the film. However, in this case, all I had was stetsons and guns.
