I don't know if we've been green-lit yet, but I think I'll probably try to make the film either way, regardless of whether I get approval from the course or not. Which is a good thing too, because I doubt we'll get picked. Generally on the course, they don't tend to like films without some kind of social message at the forefront, like feminism or sexuality. Radio Underground is a genre film. These tend to be regarded as a novelty on the course and not taken seriously, which is a shame. However, in the mean time before I find out the verdict on the film, I think I'll plan ahead.
When it comes to the sound of the film, I want to film to feel barren. I'd like Tom's sounds to be exaggerated and other than him, there literally isn't a single sound. In Leone's Westerns, I love the sound of his landscapes. They feel empty, not just look it and I think a large part of that is down to the sound design.
In 2001: A Space Odyssey, the scene where Dave walks through the ship to switch off HAL, we hear inside Dave's helmet. The overwhelming sound is of Dave's breathing. I found this very unsettling and it's something I would like to do in Radio Underground when Tom is outside the bunker.
